ভূতের গল্প ছেলেবেলা থেকে শুনছি। কত জনের কত রকমের কাহিনি। কারো শোনা কথা আবার কারও-বা নিজের চোখে দেখা। কেউ অপঘাতে মরেছে তারপর ভূত হয়ে দেখা দিয়েছে, গয়ায় পিণ্ডদানের পর আর দেখা যায়নি। কেউ-বা খুন হয়েছে, তারপর হত্যাকারী ফাঁসিতে না ঝোলা পর্যন্ত তার বার বার আবির্ভাব ঘটেছে। কোথাও-বা অতর্কিতে প্রেতাত্মা কারও স্কন্ধে ভর করে অনেক গোপন কথা প্রকাশ করে দিচ্ছে। এমনি কত একক ভূতের কাহিনি। আবার দলবদ্ধ ভূতের আবির্ভাবের কথাও আছে।
বাংলা লোকসাহিত্যে ভূত একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ। পুরাতন এবং নতুন উভয় বাংলা রূপকথায় প্রায়ই ভূতের ধারনা ব্যবহার করা হয়। আধুনিক বাংলা সাহিত্যেও প্রায়ই ভূতের উদাহরণ পাওয়া যায়।

Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of phantom armies, trains, ships, and even the ghosts of animals have also been recounted.
